About Alessandra

Alessandra Raed is a playwright, theatre director, drama teacher and actress with many works in theatre in Brazil and in the USA. Alessandra holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism majoring entertainment arts in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (1996). In Australia, she holds an Associate Degree of Creative Writing (2016) and a Bachelor of Art/Education majoring Drama (2020), both with Southern Cross University. Alessandra is also a registered actress with a Diploma in Theatre with ETLA (Leonardo Alves School of Theatre) in Rio de Janeiro (graduated in 1998).

Brazil and the USA: Among her works in theatre, there is Maquina dos Sonhos (2007) inspired by the book Illusions from American author Richard Bach. The play was written and produced by Alessandra in Rio de Janeiro and staged for 9 months. The play featured the city newspapers with high feedback. A Lira dos Vinte Anos (2006) from Brazilian playwright Paulo Cesar Coutinho is another play Alessandra acted on for 6 months in. Alessandra was one of three nominees for best actress at the Coca-Cola Theatre Award in the city. Alessandra has also attended several modern ballet and jazz classes at Broadway Dance Centre, in New York City, and has also played a part in the one-month off-Broadway production of Rent Musical, in New York City downtown. She has been back to New York City in April 2019 for work purposes of watching musicals and catching up with the latest ideas onstage performances.

Australia: Since Alessandra moved to Australia in 2008, she has been working as playwright, theatre director, and drama teacher. For the last 15 years, she has directed Starlettes Drama Theatre. Among many plays she adapted, produced and directed there are Alice in Wonderland, Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, The Wizard of Oz, Aladdin, Mean Girls, Grease, Into the Woods, Flashdance, Moulin Rouge, Mamma Mia, Chicago, Burlesque, Rock Horror Picture Show, The Greatest Showman, Greek Wedding, and Maids of Honour.

In 2016, Alessandra has published the kids book Naughty Nana. In 2019, she published its sequel Naughty Nana and the Old House around the Corner; and Noise – a collection of short stories and poems set in Rio de Janeiro. In 2020, she published the book Papers – Essays in Drama and Literature. More of her works are on the American literary magazines, Anti-Heroin Chic, The Borfski Press, The Basil O’ Flaherty, Tiny Spoon, and The Ugly Writers. In Australia, she won third prize in the 2016 Fusion Poetry Competition at Southern Cross University with her poem ‘Hummus and Herbs’ about family of immigrants.

In 2022, she wrote and produced the play The Journey, an original script inspired by The Divine Comedy poem written by Italian poet Dante Alighieri in the 1300. The play served as an awareness to mental health in Australia.

In 2023 she wrote and produced the comedy Online Dating Sucks Until... The play was watched and loved by audiences on the Gold Coast.

In 2024 she wrote and produced the play Y2K, and the world didn’t end, inspired by the events that follow the madness about the computer bug in 1999 that was going to end the world once it turned into 2000. Another loved play by audiences on the Gold Coast.

In 2025 she wrote and produced the play The Reunion, a comedy about 6 high school friends in their 50s looking for a change in their lives. They decided to go back to theatre where they must play bits and pieces of Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream.
